A handsome matted pair of antique bird prints featuring a Chimney Swallow and Green Woodpecker, originally published in R. Bowdler Sharpe’s A Hand-Book to the Birds of Great Britain, part of Lloyd’s Natural History, 1896–1897.
The pairing works beautifully as a decorative natural history set: the Chimney Swallow has a long, elegant silhouette against pale grasses, while the Green Woodpecker brings stronger color with green plumage, a vivid red crown, and soft woodland detail. Together, they have a moody library-style presence that feels especially strong in the black mats.
Each plate is titled beneath the image and marked with its plate number at the upper right: Plate XXVIII, “Chimney Swallow,” and Plate XXXII, “Green Woodpecker.” The visible imprint reads Wyman & Sons Limited.
These are original antique chromolithographic prints from the 1890s, not modern reproductions. Presented as shown in black 8 x 10 in. acid-free mats with acid-free backing boards. Unframed and ready to place into standard 8 x 10 frames.
Archival Presentation:
Every piece mounted or matted by AJ | Gilded is presented using archival, reversible methods designed to protect the paper itself. These prints are mounted with archival hinging strips attached to the backing, with no adhesive applied directly to the artwork. Only acid-free materials are in direct contact with the prints. While we are committed to providing tasteful art and collectibles, we are even more committed to preserving them for the next generation.
Styling branches shown in some photos are not included.

Most of the toning and foxing noted is at the outer margins and is largely covered by the mats in the current presentation. The visible image areas present well overall. The Chimney Swallow plate shows heavier toning and spotting near the outer margins, and the Green Woodpecker plate shows scattered foxing, especially near the upper margin and on the reverse. Presented in new black acid-free mats with acid-free backing boards. Mounted with archival hinging strips attached to the backing, with no adhesive applied directly to the artwork.
