This large Spanish olive jar from the 19th century is all hand-decorated in artistic sgraffito lines and twisting ropes that encircle the form, now covered in a wonderful patina that sparks the imagination. The rather bulbous shape is ringed with flat bands in between applied ropes of clay that look like they are twisting around the circumference–a sign of the artisan’s vison to elevate the culinary intention of this humble olive jar to a higher status of studio pottery that can be enjoyed in the home or garden. Random spots of white and green lichen or moss add a true organic element to its unique charm. The robust thickness of the fired terracotta makes this antique still inclined to be used; there is not a drainage hole in the base which may limit the decorative functions. Please view the detailed images for the current condition as they are an essential part of the description.
