Condition: Wood in good condition, treated against wood-boring insects. Fabric shows wear; reupholstering and adding more padding would be best.

The Bridge chair originated in the early 20th century in French bourgeois drawing rooms. The preferred pastime during the interwar period was a card game played around a table: bridge, to be precise. A seat was needed that wasn't too wide, with relatively low armrests (so as not to interfere with arm movements during the game), and a relatively low back (somewhat rigid, allowing players to sit upright). It became an essential element of the Art Deco period from 1920 to 1940. High-end designs by Jules Leleu and Jean Pascaud, among others, stand out from that era. See less
