Mark Rothko
American, 1903–1970
Mark Rothko was one of the most significant figures of Abstract Expressionism and the Color Field movement. Born in Latvia and raised in Portland, Oregon, Rothko developed his signature style of luminous, hovering rectangles of color in the late 1940s. He believed his paintings could convey basic human emotions—tragedy, ecstasy, doom—and recommended viewers stand just 18 inches from the canvas to experience their full psychological power. Rothko's works are held in major collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Modern, and the National Gallery of Art. Blue and Gray (1962) is part of the permanent collection of the Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/Basel.
