Three-door commode in the bombé form of Dutch-German Baroque style, dating from the 18th century or inspired by a later continuation of this design tradition. The convex curved front, the carved shell ornament on the apron, and the gilded pull handles with garland motifs and ram heads create a formally cohesive composition with calm, balanced proportions.
Historical context
The bombé commode—known in the Netherlands as a “buikcommode”—is a furniture form widely used in the 18th century in the Dutch and North German regions, deriving from French Baroque models. As a representative storage piece in bourgeois and aristocratic interiors, its curved front required highly skilled woodworking. The hardware with garland motifs, ram heads, and oval central medallions reflects early Neoclassical influence, which gradually replaced Baroque ornamentation in the late 18th century.
Features
Bombé form with convex curved drawers, profiled drawer divisions, and shaped sides
Gilded pull handles with figurative decoration: ram heads, garlands, and oval central medallion
Design
Dutch-German Baroque, 18th century. The overall form follows the classical canon: bombé silhouette, cabriole legs with volutes, and shell-carved apron decoration. The hardware—garland motifs, ram heads, and neoclassical medallion—belongs to the early Neoclassical period, indicating the late phase of this furniture type.
The refinishing of the body in deep anthracite black and the natural oak top creates a material contrast that highlights the historical form.
