A charming and unusual antique steel engraving titled “The Monkey and Crows,” drawn by William Daniell, R.A. and engraved by Robert Brandard for The Oriental Annual, or Scenes in India, published in 1836.
The scene depicts a tethered monkey seated along the coast at Tellicherry, India, surrounded by a flock of crows with sailing vessels, palms, distant hills, and shoreline figures in the background. The image illustrates a curious 19th-century travel anecdote about animal cunning, in which a tame monkey outwits the crows that had been stealing its food.
Presented in an 8x10 warm walnut wood frame with a wide muted olive-gray brown mat, giving the small engraving a refined, collected presence. The soft tonal quality of the antique print pairs beautifully with the earthy mat and wood frame, creating a moody library, study, or cabinet-of-curiosities feel.
A wonderful small-scale piece for a gallery wall, bookshelf vignette, powder room, study, natural-history-inspired interior, or layered antique art collection. Its appeal is in the mix of age, oddity, and elegance: a true 1830s printed work with an unexpectedly memorable animal subject.

The visible image area presents well, with soft tonal detail and no major distracting damage apparent in the framed presentation. The original sheet shows darker toning and wear around the outer margins, which are covered by the mat in the current 8x10 framed presentation. The printed title/caption beneath the image is faint from age and partially covered by the mat; this was intentional for a cleaner framed look. Frame and mat present well overall with light normal wear from handling/display. Please review photos for full condition and presentation. less
