This is an original French pochoir from Le Document du Décorateur, an unbound French collection of design plates dating to the early 1900s. This image is by E.A. Séguy who was a master artist and designer who worked in Paris in the early 20th century. He produced numerous pochoirs of nature themed illustrations and patterns. His worked spanned both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. He is famous for his designs of papillons (butterflies), insects, florals, etc. He used bright colors and strong geometric patterning which became inspiration for ornamental and decorative designs in textiles and wallpaper. Pochoir is a stencil-based printing technique that was popular is Paris in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. It was used by fashion and architectural illustrators who hand colored, or hand illustrated their prints as was done with this print. The manual aspect of pochoir has been both one of its most valuable attributes and one of its greatest failures as a printing medium. It is both labor and time consuming, making it an expensive and slow process of printmaking. As a result, this technique was short lived and was replaced by more modern lithography techniques. Thus, pochoirs have become rare and highly collectible with the passage of time.
This image reflects Seguy's mastery of pochoir. It is a decorative study of floral designs. Note the patterning and movement in the work, the beautiful use of color and the "jeweled" highlights. This is a rare and unique pochoir by a highly collectible graphic artist. Excellent condition. In rare horizontal format. 13.5 x 10.75 inches. Comes matted in a neutral tone 16 x 20 custom mat ready for a standard size frame. Please allow time for custom matting.

- Upon inspection, If you decide not to move forward with the purchase, you or your agent must refuse the item at the time of pickup/delivery from the seller

Cancellations
