Up for your consideration in this characterful antique pair of Bo’Ness glazed earthenware pug dog mantel figures, modeled in the expressive Scottish tradition. A pair of this age, in this large 12-inch scale, with strong condition and still remaining together as an original unseparated pair, is genuinely uncommon and highly collectible. These late‑19th to early‑20th‑century pugs feature original glass eyes, hand‑applied mottled glazing, and gilt collars, all hallmarks of Bo’Ness animal production. Bo’Ness pottery refers to a group of potteries operating in Bo’ness (Borrowstounness), West Lothian, Scotland, and known for their expressive animal figures. This pair shows all the hallmarks of the pottery’s production: rounded bodies, defined muzzles, alert ears, and warm hand‑applied glazing.
The dogs are mirror‑posed, making them ideal for mantel styling, flanking a stack of books, or anchoring a vignette. The glaze variation and subtle surface texture add charm and authenticity consistent with period Scottish ceramics.
