Grace Spongberg (American, 1906-1992) "Yacht Harbor Diamond Head in Background" oil pastel on paper, titled and estate stamp on reverse.
Grace Spongberg grew up on W. 102nd Street in the Beverly neighborhood of southwest Chicago. She was a lifelong Chicagoan and, born to Scandinavian parents, a first generation American. Spongberg trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with Louis Rittman (1889-1963) and Albert Krehbiel (1873-1945). She exhibited with the Alumni Association of the Institute.
Spongberg also exhibited many other places including the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Cincinnati Art Museum, Joslyn Art Museum (Omaha, NE), Renaissance Society (Chicago), Art Student's League, Riverside Museum (NYC), Chicago Society of Artists (where she was a member and director), and extensively with the Swedish-American Art Association.
Over 20 years through the Swedish American Art Association, she exhibited "Taxco Street Scene," "Twenty-Five Foot Lots," and "Grillwork and Carriage," a New Orleans scene. Her 1936 entry "Washington Square" won purchase prize, sending the painting to Sweden to be part of the Vaxsjo Memorial Collection, which is today at the Smaland Museum.
She also exhibited many times at the Benedict Gallery at Hull House, including a joint show in 1951 with her fellow artist and roommate Hatti Hayes.
A WPA mural, one of several she completed, survives and was restored at Bennett Elementary School on South Prairie Ave.
Collections: Smart Museum at the University of Chicago, Block Museum at Northwestern University and the Smaland Museum (Sweden).
