An elegant three-drawer chest from france in the louis xv style, dating from the second half of the 19th century, when french rococo forms were adopted and reproduced to a high standard in european furniture production. The curved basic form, the diagonally veneered drawers with fine thread inlays, and the figuratively crafted bronze fittings form an elegantly cohesive ensemble of serene design quality.
historical context:
in 18th-century france, the three-drawer chest was a central piece of furniture in the formal drawing room and bedchamber. Its design heyday fell during the louis xv period (c. 1723–1774), when the curved bombé shape, diagonally laid veneer, gilded bronze fittings (ormolu) and marble top were regarded as hallmarks of a sophisticated interior design culture. The piece served to store linen and clothing, yet was also conceived as a status symbol that visibly reflected its owner’s rank and taste. In the late 19th century, these forms experienced a widespread revival in the context of historicism and the napoleon iii aesthetic. European furniture workshops reproduced the characteristic rococo typology – cabriole legs, bombé front, figural bronze fittings, thread inlays – in high-quality craftsmanship and for a broader bourgeois market.
features:
curved front with diagonally veneered top panel (herringbone pattern) and all-round thread inlays in contrasting wood. Fully preserved figurative bronze fittings: bow handles, rocaille-shaped key escutcheons, corner cartouches, curved apron fittings and bronze sabots on the cabriole legs. Design and stylistic classification: louis xv style (rococo revival), second half of the 19th century. The chest of drawers follows the classic louis xv design: s-shaped cabriole legs with bronze sabots lead into a curved drawer structure that curves outwards at the front. The three-sectioned drawers are topped by a curved marble top that follows the shape of the body. The bronze fittings follow the rococo style with asymmetrically curved bow handles, floral key escutcheons and curved corner cartouches. The diagonally laid veneer in a herringbone pattern with fine fillet inlays corresponds to a decorative technique typical of louis xv chests of drawers. The side panels are framed with veneer. The overall proportions – wide front, shallow depth, medium height – correspond to the characteristic type of three-drawer chests of drawers in this style.
function:
formerly: storage furniture for linen and clothing in the drawing room or bedroom; also designed as a piece of display furniture. Today: chest of drawers or sideboard in the living room, bedroom or hallway; marble top can be used as a storage surface.
dimensions:
height: 82 cm width: 102 cm depth: 47 cm
material and condition:
veneer predominantly mahogany with thread inlays of contrasting wood. Original bronze fittings (bow handles, key escutcheons, corner cartouches, apron fittings, sabots) preserved. Marble top with a grey-brown grain featuring white and rust-coloured veins, following the curved outline of the body. Condition: very well preserved for its age, professionally inspected and restored by kastellan. Surfaces with a subtle patina and few age-related signs of wear
