A 1953 etching with aquatint by the Brazilian artist Arthur Luiz Piza (1928-2017). This abstract work depicts organic shapes in black floating against a background of pale green designs and black splattered dots. Signed to the lower right, the print is numbered 144/220 to the lower left and is displayed in a wooden frame and a cream mat.
Arthur Luiz Piza was born in São Paulo in 1928, and began taking painting lessons from Antonio Gomide, the Brazilian modernist artist. Piza developed a love for different printmaking techniques, include intaglio and engraving, after taking part in the first São Paulo Biennale in 1952. The following year, he moved to Paris to train under Johnny Friedlander, an important figure in the printmaking world. Piza's career took off in the late 1950s, when he began to exhibit his work across Europe and back home, in Brazil. To this day, his work is shown in the Guggenheim in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Library of France.
