This armchair designed by Ole Wanscher and produced by Cado in Denmark during the 1960s is a refined example of mature Scandinavian modernism. Wanscher’s work is known for its calm lines, balanced proportions, and exceptional understanding of materials—qualities that continue to define the best of Danish design.
The frame is made from solid teak with a warm color and distinctive grain, which is preserved in very good original condition with minimal signs of use in the form of minor scratches. Characteristic features of this model include subtly contoured armrests and a light, open frame, which give the armchair an elegant yet understated character. The seat and backrest have been reupholstered in a beige fabric made from recycled wool.
Stylistically, the chair belongs firmly to the mid-century modern tradition, where functionality, ergonomics, and timeless proportions take priority over unnecessary decoration. Wanscher often drew inspiration from classical European furniture, simplifying traditional forms into modern, visually lighter constructions. The result is furniture that feels both elegant and highly practical.
The chair works equally well as a comfortable everyday lounge piece and as a defining element within an interior. The carefully shaped backrest and armrests provide a relaxed, natural seating position, while the open frame keeps the design visually light despite its solid craftsmanship. It is the kind of furniture that ages exceptionally well—quiet, functional, and easy to integrate into both contemporary and classic interiors.
Ole Wanscher was one of the key figures of 20th-century Danish design. Trained under Kaare Klint, he combined traditional cabinetmaking with a modern approach to form and ergonomics. His furniture was produced by some of the most respected Danish manufacturers, and many of his designs remain highly regarded today.
Cado, founded by Poul Cadovius, was among the most influential Danish furniture producers of the mid-century modern era, known for collaborating with leading designers and maintaining high standards of craftsmanship and functionality. This piece has an attribution mark,
