The dense, dark wood is characteristic of ironwood, which is similar to ebony and commonly used for intricate wildlife sculptures.These pieces are typically shaped using rasps and finished by polishing with desert sand before being coated with a thin layer of wax. Such items are generally intended as decorative objects or figurines rather than functional hunting decoys. It is unusual to find a duck and this is beautifully carved in a MCM manner. The carver on this one is exceptional. He used the grains of the wood to show movement and feathers, the tail feathers are very good. The ironwood is very dense and heavy. See less
