Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 1. Excellent condition - never framed.

In Manet’s day Spanish Art was practically unknown in France. A trip to Spain revealed it to him, and he was greatly taken by what he saw, finding in it much that was akin to his own temperament and taste. The visit of a troupe of Spanish dancers to Paris inspired this portrait, which had a very hostile reception from the critics, who resented the boldness of its realism and decried the “garish medley” of colors. Yet, really, the color-scheme is quite simple, consisting of two leading tones; those to which Baudelaire referred in the quatrain he wrote about this picture, containing the famous line: "Le charme inattendu d’un bijou rose et noir."
