Spectacular Imari porcelain bowl made in Japan in the early 19th century, around 1820. It is made of white porcelain, covered with polychrome glazes featuring geometric and floral motifs in ochre, cobalt blue, and gold. Imari porcelain is characterized by its elaborate decoration, almost always floral, created to appeal to Western markets, and the use of cobalt blue underglaze and red (sometimes green) overglaze, frequently embellished with gold. The result is a striking ornament thanks to the intense contrast of the blue.
Imari porcelain is the Western name given to porcelain products made in the town of Arita (Saga Prefecture), Japan. Specifically, Imari is the neighboring city from whose port the porcelain is exported abroad. Arita's origins as a pottery center date back to the 18th century, when a kaolin deposit was discovered. from then on, porcelain with a strong Chinese influence was produced, as before this discovery, all the ceramics in Japan were imported from China and Korea. Thanks to its high export volume, Imari porcelain designs were crucial in the process of orientalizing European ceramics in the porcelain production centers of Meissen and Vincennes. After the Meiji era, Imari porcelain underwent a process of industrialization, and its production continues to this day.
