Designed by … Read more A gorgeous, iconic and rare 1970s tall back eames ‘soft pad’ swivel lounge chair in fair-to-good vintage condition. Designed by american mid century modern supremos ray and charles eames in 1969 and produced by herman miller, circa 1975, this celebrated lounge chair will add super comfort, quality and a stylish, quintessentially ‘mid century’ aesthetic to any interior.

much sought after for their classically cool and effortlessly timeless look, this ea216 is part of the eames ‘soft pad group’ of chairs and features a swivel mechanism, aluminium arms and has three plush chestnut-coloured leather soft pad cushions to the back and one larger one to the seat, ensuring the ultimate in stylish and luxuriant relaxation.

set on a cruciform four-star base with original white plastic glides, the rear of the back is upholstered in alexander girard fabric, dating this chair to around 1975, and the underside of the seat has the original 1970s herman miller ‘early black strip’ sticker affixed as well as the herman miller production stamp to the aluminium frame.

all in all this is a wonderful and rare design icon, which will enhance any setting with its super comfort, herman miller quality and its effortlessly cool, quintessentially mid century, eames aesthetic.

condition
this super lounge chair is in fair-to-good vintage condition. Structurally sound, the swivel mechanism works wonderfully, and it has signs of its not inconsiderable age, including marks and wear to the aluminium frame, peeling to the protective lacquer covering the arms and some scratching to the metal. The leather is in varied condition – the rear shoulders/corners show wear, the leather to the three back cushions is in very good condition bar the top of the upper cushion which has dried out in the past and has some cracking. Similarly, the seat cushion has cracking towards the front. The leather has been treated to keep it rejuvenated. Overall this super lounge chair is a classic design icon with signs of age, but will last for many more years if well looked after – please see the photos.
