A beautifully atmospheric Victorian sporting oil painting depicting a strawberry grey roan hunter standing within a stable interior beside an attentive terrier. Dating to circa 1885 and attributed to the Circle of Edwin Frederick Holt, this elegant British equestrian painting captures the quiet refinement and country house charm of late 19th century sporting life.

Executed in oil on canvas, the composition features warm earthy tones, naturalistic horse portraiture, and softly illuminated stable surroundings characteristic of traditional English sporting art. The rare strawberry grey roan colouring gives the horse exceptional decorative presence, while the terrier companion introduces warmth, personality, and narrative interest.

The painting demonstrates strong stylistic qualities associated with Holt and the Victorian sporting school, including carefully observed equine anatomy, painterly brushwork, atmospheric interiors, and restrained realism. Professionally restored and conserved in 2025 by a Fine Art Conservator and exhibited in The Sporting Tradition: British Equestrian and Animal Painting 1850–1900 at the Famous Lord Hill Museum, Shropshire.
