Original 1859 Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) Japanese Woodblock Print – Arashi Kichisaburo III as Token Gonbei – MFA Exhibition Piece
Authentic 19th century Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by renowned Edo-period master Utagawa Kunisada (also signed Toyokuni), dated 1859. This striking theatrical portrait depicts celebrated kabuki actor Arashi Kichisaburo III in the role of Token Gonbei.
The composition features Kunisada’s signature dramatic elegance, with a richly patterned kimono set against a dark atmospheric background accented by blossoming branches. The expressive portraiture and refined detail exemplify the sophisticated style that made Kunisada one of the most influential ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period.
According to the notation on the reverse, this print was included in the 2017 Museum of Fine Arts exhibition, “Kuniyoshi vs. Kunisada”, featuring approximately 100 prints. A wonderful example with notable exhibition provenance.
Professionally framed using acid-free materials to help preserve the artwork. Ready for display.
