A beautiful grouping from Wedgwood's storied Whitehall pattern — the very design commissioned for use at 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British Prime Minister. Luminous bone china edged in a trailing hand-gilded ivy vine with delicate berries, this partial service includes four teacups with matching saucers, two side plates, and a 10" square handled sandwich tray — everything you need for a proper afternoon tea for four.
The Pattern
Whitehall W4001 is distinguished by its trailing gold ivy vine applied to very fine English bone china. The motif runs along cup rims, saucer borders, plate edges, and fully encircles the sandwich tray's wide flanged rim — a coherent, quietly authoritative presence on any table. The gold remains vivid and fully intact on every piece in this set.
The Sandwich Tray
The 10" square handled sandwich tray — with its elegant scroll tab handles and deeply flanged border — is the defining piece of a proper British afternoon tea service and among the more difficult Whitehall forms to find today.
Provenance
From the personal collection of an American diplomat stationed in Great Britain during the 1950s — the golden age of Anglo-American relations. These pieces were thoughtfully chosen for the family's summer home in East Hampton, NY, and impeccably maintained across seven decades. Acquired at the East Hampton estate sale of that property.
