Sicilian Caltagirone Blue Glazed Ceramic Pottery Figurative Vase, Signed
Offered for sale is a blue Sicilian Moorish Head ceramic vase known in Italy as a Testa di Moro. These distinct ceramic pieces are handcrafted in Caltagirone, a Sicilian town celebrated worldwide for its pottery. According to Sicilian folklore, a beautiful young woman from Palermo fell in love with a Moorish man around 1100 CE. Upon discovering he had a secret family waiting for him back East, she cut off his head in a fit of jealousy, turning it into a pot to grow her basil. The basil grew so beautifully that all her neighbors commissioned ceramic replicas.
The vase is signed on the underside and includes a business card from the artist who created it.
