This antique Japanese hibachi dates from the late Meiji to early Taishō period. The piece has a long, low silhouette with a central fire compartment, lined with zinc and fitted with a removable iron gotoku. Originally, charcoal would have been placed inside; the gotoku served as a stand for a kettle, pot or bowl above the heat.

The layout is both elegant and practical. Beneath the wide hibachi section are two low drawers, while the raised side section contains three smaller drawers. All drawers are fitted with simple metal pull handles. The sides feature decorative hand-carved grips, beautifully integrated into the wooden body.

The wood has a deep, warm patina with a soft sheen, subtle traces of use and a rich reddish-brown colour. The zinc inner tray shows oxidation, darkened areas and signs of its original function, adding depth and authenticity. The contrast between the refined wooden cabinet, the aged metal lining and the graphic iron gotoku gives the piece a strong architectural presence.

Today, this hibachi works beautifully as a low display cabinet, planter or decorative storage piece. The central opening can be used for a large plant, a bowl, moss arrangement or understated ikebana composition. The drawers offer practical storage for small objects, papers or accessories. As a magazine cabinet or sculptural accent in a shop interior, entrance hall or living space, it brings a powerful sense of Japanese character and warmth. See less
