Dimensions: height 60 cm, width 37 cm, depth 17 cm.

This vintage Japanese shizenboku object dates from the Shōwa period. It is made from a naturally shaped section of wood with a side branch, preserving the original growth pattern of the tree. The vertical trunk, projecting branch, knots and irregular contours give the piece a strong sculptural character.

The wood has been smoothly finished and given a lightly glossy lacquer. The grain, dark knot openings and organic swellings are beautifully visible, giving the object a calm wabi-sabi presence.

Today, this is a highly decorative object for a contemporary interior. Beautiful as a sculptural piece in its own right, as a backdrop for ceramics, beside a plant or combined with a restrained ikebana arrangement. See less
