Dimensions: height 27 cm, width 15 cm, depth 11 cm.

This vintage Japanese mask probably dates from the Shōwa period, ca. 1950–1970. It depicts Miroku Bosatsu, the Maitreya Bodhisattva. The Japanese label on the inside refers to “Miroku Bosatsu mask”, “modelled after a National Treasure” and “kanshitsu”, or dry-lacquer mask. The object appears to be made in a dry-lacquer or composite technique, with a textile-lined interior.

The mask has a calm, meditative presence, with softly modelled features, restrained eyes and a subtle smile. The dark bronze-gold finish has aged beautifully, with black worn areas and exposed layers that give the surface depth and character. This creates a strong wabi-sabi quality.

The reverse shows the black textile lining, the original Japanese label and a hanging cord. with its compact size and powerful expression, this is a beautiful wall object for a contemporary interior. It works especially well as a spiritual decorative accent, combined with ceramics, wood, textiles or other Japanese objects.

The mask is in beautiful vintage condition, with normal signs of use, patina and wear consistent with age and material. See less
