This finely executed mid-century enamel vase features a pale celadon-blue ground decorated with orchid blossoms and polished chrome or nickel-plated mounts. The underside bears the Ando orchid mark associated with the renowned Ando Cloisonné Company of Nagoya, Japan.

The accompanying stand is inscribed:

“To Major Thomas T. Sakamoto
From Morisada Tonaki
March 1961
Okinawa”
Historical research identifies Colonel Thomas T. Sakamoto as a distinguished Japanese-American Military Intelligence Service officer active in Okinawa during the early Cold War era. Morisada Tonaki appears in Okinawan archival records as an influential civic and business leader involved in postwar reconstruction during the U.S. administration period.
