An exceptional French Aesthetic Movement bamboo side table or occasional table, executed in the Japonisme taste and dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1890.

Created during the height of Europe’s fascination with Japanese decorative arts, the table embodies the refined cross-cultural aesthetic that emerged in France following the great international expositions of the late 19th century. The design merges Eastern-inspired minimalism with the sophisticated ornamentation associated with the French Aesthetic Movement.

The rectangular top is inset with a deep black lacquered panel framed by finely detailed bamboo borders, all raised upon an extraordinarily intricate burnt bamboo trellis base. The bamboo displays rich caramel, honey, and espresso tonal variations achieved through smoking and scorching techniques that accentuate the natural figuring of the cane.
