Imperial Russian Lacquered Papier-Mâché Troika Box by the Lukutin Factory, Moscow, circa 1880–1910
This finely executed Imperial Russian lacquered papier-mâché box was produced by the renowned Lukutin Factory of Moscow, the most prestigious and influential workshop in the history of Russian lacquer art. Dating to the late 19th to early 20th century, the box exemplifies the height of pre-Revolutionary craftsmanship and taste.
The lid is adorned with a hand-painted winter troika scene, depicting three horses in full gallop pulling a sleigh across a snow-covered landscape. A bundled coachman urges the team forward with a raised whip, while two passengers sit closely within the sleigh, wrapped against the cold. Slender birch trees rise in the background, anchoring the composition in the Russian countryside. The scene is rendered with notable dynamism and precision, capturing both movement and atmosphere—hallmarks of elite Lukutin production.
The painting is set against a vivid red lacquer ground, a classic and highly desirable choice that heightens contrast and visual drama. The box is constructed of layered papier-mâché, lacquered and hand-polished to a soft gloss, with black lacquered sides and base.
The interior bears a gilt Lukutin factory stamp reading “ФАБР. ЛУКУТИНА / МОСКВА” (Factory of Lukutin, Moscow) beneath four Imperial double-headed eagles. The four-eagle mark denotes the highest quality grade, reserved for luxury production and confirming manufacture during the Imperial period, prior to the 1917 Revolution.
Lukutin boxes are widely regarded as the gold standard of Russian lacquer and represent the direct foundation of the later Fedoskino School. Examples with multi-eagle marks are increasingly scarce and highly sought after by collectors of Russian decorative arts.
