Pair of Italian Bamboo and Rattan Club Chairs Attributed to Franco Albini, Italy, 1950s
A sculptural and highly refined pair of Italian bamboo and rattan club chairs attributed to Franco Albini, produced in Italy circa 1950s. Elegant in profile and unusually architectural in construction, the chairs marry Albini’s signature postwar lightness with the organic warmth of hand-worked natural materials.
Each chair is formed with a continuous bent bamboo frame, the arms sweeping in a fluid, uninterrupted curve that resolves into a rounded back crest and deeply sloped seat. The woven rattan seat and back are tightly executed and suspended within the frame, creating a supple, hammock-like sit that is both visually light and surprisingly comfortable. Particularly distinctive are the unusual black wrought iron bases—an uncommon and sophisticated contrast to the warmth of the bamboo—giving the chairs a sharper architectural profile than most midcentury rattan examples.
The design reflects the hallmarks associated with Albini’s work of the period: structural clarity, honest materials, and an elegant synthesis of modernism and craft. While not marked, the chairs closely align with Italian midcentury bamboo and cane seating produced in the orbit of Franco Albini and Bonacina during the postwar period, where vernacular materials were elevated through disciplined modernist form.
Comfortable, sculptural, and highly usable, these chairs work equally well in a Palm Beach interior, a covered loggia, or as accent seating within a layered modernist room. Their compact footprint and low,
enveloping profile makes them especially versatile.
A sophisticated and uncommon pair of Italian midcentury rattan lounge
chairs with a strong architectural presence.
