Art Deco Four-Panel Black Lacquer & Gilt Screen, Attributed to Paul Fehér, France, 20th Century
This striking fourfold Art Deco screen, attributed to the circle of Paul Fehér, exemplifies the refined synthesis of geometry, figuration, and decorative abstraction that defined French Art Deco interiors between the wars. Executed in black lacquer with gilt decoration, the screen presents a dramatic interplay of matte and luminous surfaces.
The two central panels feature mirrored allegorical female figures playing violins, conceived as modern muses. Their elongated bodies, stylized drapery, and rhythmic poses are framed by sweeping arcs and stepped architectural forms, closely echoing Fehér’s celebrated wrought-iron Muse with Violin screen designs. Surrounding motifs of scrolling foliage, geometric banding, and radiating curves reinforce the movement and symmetry of the composition, while the outer panels offer a more restrained balance of abstracted botanical and linear ornament.
The gilt decoration is finely articulated, with crisp linework and subtle tonal variation that contrasts beautifully against the deep black lacquer ground. The reverse is decorated with a more minimal botanical motif, allowing the screen to function as a fully finished sculptural element within a space.
Constructed as a four-panel folding screen, the piece retains its original hinges and presents with strong structural integrity. The scale is generous yet elegant, suitable as a room divider, architectural backdrop, or statement decorative object.
