Frederick G. R. Roth “Columbia Lion” American Bronze Animalier Sculpture, Early 20th Century
A finely modeled American bronze sculpture titled “Columbia Lion” by noted animalier sculptor Frederick George Richard Roth (1872–1944). The sculpture depicts a powerful standing lion in a naturalistic pose, its muscular body elongated as it steps forward across a textured ground base. The mane is rendered with expressive modeling while the torso and flanks are smoothly articulated, emphasizing the animal’s anatomy and quiet strength.
The base bears the cast inscription “COLUMBIA LION” along with the molded copyright “© FGR Roth,” identifying the sculptor and the subject. Roth was one of the most respected American sculptors of animal subjects in the early twentieth century, celebrated for his ability to capture both the physical presence and character of wildlife. His works were widely exhibited and he created several monumental animal sculptures for public institutions and parks.
This model relates to Roth’s association with Columbia University, whose lion has long served as the institution’s emblem. Small bronzes such as this example were produced in the early twentieth century as commemorative desk sculptures and collector’s pieces, reflecting the popularity of American Beaux-Arts animalier sculpture during the period.
Cast using traditional bronze techniques and finished with a rich warm patina, the sculpture presents a beautifully compact and sculptural form suitable for display on a desk, bookshelf, or cabinet of curiosities.
