Pair of Anglo-Indian Engraved Brass Jardinieres with Exotic Animal Motifs, India, Circa 1880
A striking pair of late 19th-century Anglo-Indian brass jardinieres, richly hand-worked with dense engraved decoration depicting exotic animals, birds, and stylized jungle foliage. Made in India during the British Raj, these sculptural vessels exemplify the highly ornamental decorative arts produced for the Anglo-Indian export market in the late 19th century, when Indian craftsmen adapted traditional metalworking techniques for colonial interiors and European taste.
Each jardiniere is hand-raised in heavy-gauge brass with a broad, flared rim, compressed globular body, and low ring foot, fitted with applied circular ring handles. Their surfaces are extensively hand chased, engraved, and punch-worked with lively scenes of deer, jungle cats, birds, and scrolling tropical foliage arranged in continuous landscape friezes. The decoration reflects the romanticized visual language of the Raj period, blending Mughal-inspired ornament with the exotic naturalism favored in British colonial design.
Originally conceived as luxury decorative vessels, these forms were used as jardinieres, cachepots, or ceremonial basins and remain exceptionally versatile today. Ideal for palms, orchids, or large floral arrangements, they also make superb sculptural cachepots, wine coolers, or decorative floor vessels in Anglo-Indian, maximalist, or Palm Beach interiors.
A richly scaled and beautifully matched pair with exceptional decorative presence and strong architectural impact.
