Theodore Haviland Limoges Vienna-Style Portrait Charger, Solitude, c. 1900
A refined Théodore Haviland Limoges porcelain portrait charger in the Royal Vienna taste, dating to circa 1895–1910. This elegant example features a central reserve depicting a semi-draped female figure seated in a pastoral landscape, rendered in soft, atmospheric tones. Her downcast gaze and contemplative pose evoke allegorical themes such as solitude in keeping with the romantic sensibilities of late 19th-century European decorative arts.
The portrait is framed within a richly saturated emerald green ground, extensively embellished with intricate raised gilt scrollwork and delicate floral tracery, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with Belle Époque Limoges production. The gently raised gallery edge enhances its presence as both a decorative wall charger and display piece.
The central image is made with a transfer-printed base and hand-applied enamel enhancements, a factory decoration technique used by Haviland workshops to imitate the highly prized Vienna and Berlin porcelain portrait plaques of the period. This method allowed for consistent quality while retaining a nuanced, hand-finished appearance.
The underside bears the red printed mark.
“Theodore Haviland / Limoges / FRANCE / Patent applied for”
This export mark confirms production in Limoges for the American market and dates the piece to the turn of the 20th century. The “Patent applied for” notation reflects periodic innovation in decorative processes.
The portrait additionally bears a signature reading “A. Sonstre,” the artist.
An elegant and decorative example of Vienna-style porcelain, ideal for collectors of Belle Époque ceramics or refined interior display.
