moreBeing offered by a private collector, who acquired this from a reputable dealer, is this genuine Persian wool oriental Sarouk-style fine quality rug. Handwoven in Iran, it measures 3 ft 4 inches x 4 ft 11 inches plus white fringes. It uses vegetable dyes in a broad spectrum of attractive, tasteful hues (more intense than in photos).
Insurance valued at $5,500 when purchased. This is a semi-antique rug, 50-100 years old. The fringe was later replaced, and is not as bright white as the photo shows (fringe is a natural cotton color).
See photos zoomed for details, front and back. Actual colors are slightly more intense. This comes from a collector of many fine quality, strikingly beautiful and unusual authentic Persian rugs, complete with purchase receipts from the rug galleries nationwide.
Note: The apparent uneven color shades is characteristic of all genuine handmade Persian rugs and is more pronounced if the pile of the rug is thick. This rug has a thick pile. The color shades change when the rug is viewed from different directions. And, if you pass your hand back and forth over the pile, you can see the color shades change as the pile is laid in different directions. The wool of every knot of any particular color was dyed by hand with vegetable dyes as part of the same batch. The colors should become more vibrant with age as the rug is washed with soap made from vegetable products. Machine made rugs all use chemical dyes, which deteriorate with age.
Many genuine handmade Persian rugs also have occasional short streaks of darker wool, called an "abrash", which is woven into the rug to accentuate the piece.
In order to appreciate the beauty of this centuries-old art form, a novice should first acquaint himself with the process by which these rugs are made. Many books are available on the subject. Collector learned first hand while living in the Middle East on assignment. less
