An impressive lidded beer stein/tankard
Salt glaze stoneware with birds, a fox and a dog in movement, among foliate cobalt blue motifs in high relief
There is a front shield shaped medallion with German text: " Bjer Klar. Hell und Rejn jst Des Zechers Sonnenschejn" ( Beer, clear. Bright and pure is the drinker's sunshine)
Domed pewter lid with scrolled thumbpiece
The volume is stamped upfront close to the rim - 0.5 l
Circa 1880's, Germany, most likely Westerwald
Measurements: Approx. 7.2" high with lid x 5.2" across with handle x 3.6" base diameter
It weighs about 1 lb. 10 oz.
Condition: Very Good overall. Please see photos. A minor flake to the bottom rim, unobtrusive. The top of the lid is slightly pushed. All original.
