The attractive blue flambe glaze pot was once used in Japan as a brazier, a container for coals used for warming rooms in a Japanese home. The clay is a rich brown, purple sand or zisha, a name used to described the distinctive clay from Yixing, Jiangxi Province, one o the ceramic centers of China. Yixing is better known for the purple sand or zisha teapots. The center also produce utilitarian objects such as the square shape pot, and other large pots for domestic use and for export. It does not have a drain hole. The beautiful blue flambe glaze has mottling of grey, white and black areas. The color is neutral and the pot fits in any decor. It is best used as a cachepot to hide utilitarian plastic containers for plants. It is not recommended for outside use in extreme cold temperature.
On my visit visit to Yixing, the city where in the 1920's potters made this type of wares for use within and abroad, I was amazed to see this type of utilitarian vessels with the same unctuous blue black glaze on display as part of their museum exhibits. It changes one's perspective on looking at things. This pot could have been a historical specimen on display at a Chinese museum or it can now be a good looking cachepot for a large plant in your home.
