A very good original lithograph by Albert Kotin (America/Russia 1907-1980). This work is titled, "Clown" and shows a WPA era rendition of a circus clown. The work is signed and titled, in pencil, and framed in a modernist aluminum frame under glass.
This particular work exhibits some American regionalist influence, likely due to Kotin's exposure to artists such as Thomas Hart Benton, while still exhibiting some French influence from artists such as Georges Rouault.
Measurements: Measures: 20" x 16 1/2"
Sight: 13 1/2" x 10 1/4"
Kotin was quite the interesting NY artist and, in our opinion, his prints are currently underappreciated in the marketplace. He was one of the first group of New York School Abstract Expressionists. He studied with Charles Hawthorne and Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, MA and also studied in Paris at the Academie Julian, Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, the Atelier de Freque and Colarossi.
Kotin is known for his mural commissions for the sociology department of New York University and the U.S.Treasury Department in Arlington, New Jersey, and from 1933 to 1940 he took part in the Federal Art Projects of the WPA (Works Progress Administration). After the war, he participated in the famous 9th St. Exhibition (NY) of 1951, and he took part in the New York Painting and Sculpture Annuals 1953-1957 at the Stable Gallery, NY.
