The piece is in excellent condition as shown, and makes a wonderful addition to any Asian craft collection!

Traditionally suspended by the loops on its back from a temple, shrine, or tea room ceiling, it is struck with a wooden striker to produce a resonant chime. The side of the fish is cast with raised Sanskrit characters (Siddham script), which are sacred Buddhist syllables often used on ritual objects to invoke protection and blessings. The bell also has a small bronze ball inside for a more resonant effect upon striking.

This particular style of fish bell dates back to the Late Edo period (1603–1867) or the Early Meiji period (1868–1912) and is heavily influenced by earlier Chinese Ming Dynasty bronze work.
