A striking industrial optical inspection magnifier constructed from copper, iron, and glass, dating to the early-to-mid 20th century.
Originally designed as a mounted viewing or inspection instrument, the piece features a cylindrical copper shaft terminating in a cast iron mounting eye, suggesting former attachment to machinery, a drafting station, or articulated industrial support. The oversized circular lens is housed within a hand-formed copper frame, retaining an exceptional aged surface with deep industrial patina throughout.
Functional objects of this period were created with little concern for ornament, resulting in forms that today read as distinctly sculptural. The balance between the warm oxidized copper, darkened iron mount, and large optical lens gives the piece a strong Machine Age presence reminiscent of early scientific and manufacturing equipment.
Equally compelling as a decorative object, study piece, or collector’s artifact, the magnifier occupies the intersection of industrial design, optical history, and utilitarian sculpture.
