Chair is completely original, except for the shock mounts … Read more Rare, early Eames RAR rocking chair for Herman Miller dated 1957. Chair is completely original, except for the shock mounts that were professionally replaced. No Penetrol was used on the shell (it can damage and yellow overtime).

The underside is marked with a date code, beginning with “VEN”. Those three letters stand for Venice, California, which is where the Eames office was located. The shell was fabricated and then the chair was assembled at the Eames office in 1957. Quite uncommon.

The thickness of the shell and the gauge of the wire are both also correct for this time period. The red orange shell has slightly faded to a very pleasing salmon pink color. This is not due to damage or environmental factors, but it is in accordance with the pigments they were using at this time.

1957 was also the first year they began using the patent labels. This one is still present.
