While traditionally miniatures are small, often roughly 6 by 10 inches, this example is significantly larger, possibly intended as a standalone wall decor piece rather than a manuscript illustration.
It shares characteristics with both the Mughal and Rajput (specifically Rajasthani) schools. The realistic fine portraiture and architectural setting are hallmarks of Mughal art, while the vibrant colors and stylized flora in the foreground are typical of the Rajput style.
The central figures are a royal couple seated on cushions (bolsters) atop a patterned rug. They are being entertained by female musicians playing a stringed instrument (likely a veena) and a drum (mridangam or dholak).
A palace terrace or courtyard overlooking a lush garden. The geometric patterns on the ground and the white marble architecture with intricate lattice work are classic motifs in Indian courtly art.
This type of scene is common in Ragamala paintings, which are "garlands of ragas" that personify musical modes through imagery of love, devotion, and courtly life.
