19th Century Rococo Revival Gilt Overmantel Mirror with Shelf
A highly decorative mid–late 19th century Rococo Revival mirror, richly ornamented with scrolling acanthus, floral swags, and asymmetrical cartouche detailing. The frame is finished in original gilt over gesso, giving it a warm, aged patina with excellent character.
This is a particularly striking example, featuring a multi-plate mirror arrangement and an integrated lower shelf, making it ideal as an overmantel piece or statement wall mirror. The sculptural form and depth make it well suited to interiors, retail display, or photographic styling.
Details:
* Date: circa 1860–1880
* Origin: likely English or French
* Materials: gilt gesso on wood frame
* Original glass with some age-related foxing
Condition:
In good antique condition overall. There is expected wear consistent with age, including minor losses and cracking to the gesso, and wear to the gilding. The mirror plates show some foxing and age marks, adding to the authentic antique character. Structurally sound and ready to hang.
Notes:
A beautifully ornate and versatile decorative antique, perfect for period interiors, fashion shoots, or as a standout feature in a contemporary
space. Materials & Craftsmanship
Crafted from a carved wooden frame, likely pine or oak, this Rococo Revival mirror features richly detailed ornamentation created using traditional gesso work — a mixture of chalk, plaster and glue applied in layers and sculpted into elaborate scrolling leaves, floral swags and classic Rococo curves. Beneath the gilt finish sits a traditional bole layer, typically in warm red or earthy tones, which gives the surface added depth and a subtle glow where age-related wear has naturally occurred over time. The decorative finish was originally achieved using fine gold or silver leaf, a hallmark of quality period craftsmanship, creating the mirror’s elegant antique sheen and characterful patina.
