An exquisite mid-to-late 20th-century Japanese art porcelain centerpiece bowl produced by the esteemed Ryūsen Kiln (龍泉窯). This substantial piece beautifully exemplifies traditional Japanese relief-molded pottery (Yōkoku), offering an elegant balance of deep color contrast, heavy structural weight, and organic form.
The exterior body is finished in a brilliant, deep cobalt blue glaze accented with tight, horizontal ribbing that catches the light beautifully. Adorning the exterior are slightly raised, three-dimensional embossed turnip leaves surrounding a softly shaded white-and-blush turnip bulb. The crisp white porcelain interior provides a clean contrast, featuring a beautifully detailed, hand-painted blue-and-white turnip (kabu) illustration at its center. In Japanese culture, the turnip is a traditional motif symbolizing good health, longevity, and a bountiful harvest. The underside bears the authentic, hand-brushed cobalt blue kanji maker's mark for the Ryūsen kiln. This premium aesthetic heavily resembles the highly collectible embossed cobalt fruit series imported during the era by Andrea by Sadek, making it a rare and unique vegetable-motif counterpart for collectors.
At a generous 8.25 inches in diameter, this versatile statement piece successfully bridges the gap between functional tableware and fine decor. It functions beautifully as a centerpiece serving bowl for salads, side dishes, or fresh fruit on a kitchen island, while possessing enough visual weight to stand alone as a striking decorative console bowl for entryways, mantles, and shelf styling.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The porcelain retains a bright, glassy glaze with no chips, cracks, crazing, or repairs. Minimal to no surface shelf wear on the unglazed base ring.
