19th Century Louis XVI Painted Salon Armchair ~ Fauteuil retains its original painted finish, with a frame dressed in a … Read more 19th Century Louis XVI Painted Salon Armchair ~ Fauteuil retains its original painted finish, with a frame dressed in a soft grey white with traces of gilt highlighting the carved detail throughout. The rectangular back is framed with a carved rope twist molding and delicate bow crest, the arms terminating in scrolled acanthus supports above a carved and molded apron. Fluted tapered legs are characteristic of the Louis XVI style at its most refined. Retaining its original needlepoint upholstery in a delicate floral stripe of rose and sage, serviceable and elegant, a true example of the period in its most complete and authentic form.
The Louis XVI style represented a return to classical order and neoclassical elegance, its defining characteristics the refinement of line, delicacy of carved ornament and a lightness of form that set it apart from all that came before it. It remains one of the most admired and enduring of all French decorative periods, its simplicity and grace translating as naturally into contemporary interiors today as it did into the great rooms of 18th and 19th century France.
