Six Mother-of-Pearl & Silver Dinner Knives — Landers, Frary & Clark Aetna Works — American Edwardian Table, c. 1900–1915
Pulled from an old Nantucket family estate, this set of six dinner knives by Landers, Frary & Clark arrived in the company they were kept for over a century, and they deserve the same table.
Each knife measures 6¾ inches. The handles are genuine mother-of-pearl — not composite, not simulated — the kind that shifts from ivory to smoke to soft rose depending on the hour and the light. Fitted at the bolster with silver bands that seat cleanly and hold firm. The bands are unmarked, so while sterling cannot be stated with certainty, it is worth noting that Landers, Frary & Clark produced flatware with sterling silver mounts as standard practice at this quality level, and these are consistent with that tradition.
The Aetna Works designation places these among LF&C's better-quality output — the division name was applied to flatware and cutlery intended for the upper end of the domestic market, where mother-of-pearl handles and properly fitted silver were expected rather than exceptional.
Condition is good throughout. The mother-of-pearl shows the honest minor wear that a century of careful use produces — nothing lost, nothing cracked, nothing that draws the eye. Blades are sound. The silver bands carry the warm, settled patina of age.
Six knives from a table that was worth sitting at.
