A rare and collectible pair of hand-painted glass cruets from the original Victoria & Richard MacKenzie-Childs era, both stamped and dated 1991. These pieces were designed in Aurora, NY at the original MacKenzie-Childs factory on Cayuga Lake and hand-painted by trained MacKenzie-Childs artists — a multi-step firing process required to set the glass paints, gold, and platinum luster work at different temperatures.
Both pieces showcase the painterly, whimsical aesthetic that defined the Victoria & Richard era of the brand, before the company changed hands in 2001. Pieces from this pre-2001 period are highly sought after by collectors and rarely surface on the secondary market.
The taller cruet is from the "Circus" family of patterns. It features a hand-blown teal and pink neck, a zigzag enamel collar in yellow and black, painted cherries with green leaves, and an all-over pattern of indigo dots across the glass body. The applied handle and spout are decorated with 22k gold luster spots on a deep purple ground. Original cork stopper.
The shorter cruet has a striped neck in gold and lavender luster, a bold black diamond lattice with gold accents across the bulbous body, and applied amber and gold-spotted handles and spouts. A jewel-toned teal foot anchors the piece. Original cork stopper.
Together, these are a near-perfect example of the painterly, multi-pattern, "more is more" sensibility that put MacKenzie-Childs on the map in the 1990s. Stunning on a styled bar cart, kitchen shelf, or table — equally at home as functional pieces or as collected art objects.
Marked on the underside: "Victoria and Richard MacKenzie-Childs, 1991."
