19th Century French Gothic Revival Hall Bench in Stripped Oak brings the romance of medieval architecture into a richly carved and beautifully scaled piece of antique seating. Crafted in solid oak, the bench reflects the enduring influence of the Gothic Revival movement, when European cabinetmakers looked back to the great cathedrals, abbeys and ecclesiastical interiors of the Middle Ages for inspiration. The result is a piece with architectural presence, carved detail and a wonderful sense of history.
The tall paneled back is centered by an arched crest with a raised shield design framed by scrolling Gothic foliage. Across the upper rail, carved quatrefoil rosettes create a rhythmic decorative border, while the vertical linenfold panels recall the carved woodwork found in medieval choir stalls, sacristies and great halls. Linenfold carving was especially beloved in Gothic and Renaissance interiors, admired for its resemblance to folded cloth and for the depth and shadow it brought to oak paneling.
The arms feature quatrefoil cutouts, continuing the Gothic vocabulary with a lighter, more open effect. Below the seat, the front apron is carved with a handsome procession of linenfold panels, giving the bench a finished and important appearance from top to bottom. The stripped oak finish reveals the grain and warmth of the wood, softened by age and hand-waxing, with the pale tone making the carving especially visible.
There's even storage under the seat the size of a generously proportioned trunk, for additional convenience.
Beautifully suited for an entry hall, stair landing, gallery, mudroom or large vestibule, this Gothic Revival hall bench offers both function and atmosphere. It has the presence of an architectural antique, with the charm of hand-carved oak and the romantic spirit of nineteenth century craftsmanship.
