1960s Salvador Dalí Signed and Dated Work on Paper
The work shown here is a famous piece by Salvador Dalí, taken from the suite dedicated to William Shakespeare’s tragedy, “Romeo and Juliet”, published in 1975.
Our work is personally signed and dated by the artist in the top left corner “Dali 1967” and in the bottom left corner “Dalí”.
Salvador Dalí (Figueres, 1904 – 1989), mixed-colour lithograph, Scene I, Act I from “Romeo and Juliet”.
The work is taken from the suite comprising ten illustrations that Salvador Dalí created for Rizzoli Editore in 1975, for Shakespeare’s tragedy “Romeo and Juliet”.
This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important French private collection and is beautified by an impressive antique frame in gilded wood, in almost perfect condition.
Dimensions are frame excluded and the artwork is protected by glass
The work depicts the “overture” to Shakespeare’s tragedy in Verona.
In the foreground, on the left, are the servants of the Montague and Capulet families engaged in one of their recurring street brawls.
In the centre stands a Golden Dome, an architectural structure dominated by a golden-yellow dome, surmounted by an elaborate cross, evoking the opulence of the Capulet palace or a sacred building in Verona.
In this beautiful work, Salvador Dalí employs his characteristic dreamlike language with numerous Surrealist elements
The figures of the combatants are stylised, almost thread-like, conveying a sense of violent dynamism.
The dark trees framing the scene lend a solemn and foreboding tone to the impending drama.
The contrast between the sombre tones of the vegetation and the vibrant colours of the dome and the figures creates a visual tension that reflects the conflict between the passionate love and the ancestral hatred of the two families.
This lithograph forms part of an ambitious publishing project in which Dalí reinterpreted the great classics of world literature through Surrealism, combining the precision of his graphic style with a metaphysical vision of universal themes such as tragic love and destiny.
