A refined transitional-period Kinkozan Satsuma earthenware vase dating circa 1921–1927, based on the “Made in Japan” export mark and the closure of the Kinkozan factory following the death of Kinkozan Sobei VII in 1927. The compressed form, vivid cobalt palette, and restrained decorative program embody the shift from late Art Nouveau organicism toward emerging Art Deco simplification.
Sharp precision within the floral cartouches contrasts with the freer surrounding decorative fields, reflecting the layered workshop production methods common in higher-end Japanese export studios of the Taisho and early Showa era.
Both Art Nouveau and Art Deco were deeply influenced by Japonisme, and this vase beautifully bridges those aesthetics through controlled asymmetry, flattened decorative surfaces, and elegant 1920s modernity. Fine crackled satsuma earthenware body throughout.
