This is a late 1940s step chest or commode or library stairs executed in richly toned mahogany with dramatic Ming-style scrolling feet and subtle Chinoiserie influence throughout. A wonderfully sculptural and highly unusual form, blending the elegance of Chinese-inspired design with the theatrical sophistication of postwar American decorator furniture.
The previous owners acquired this piece in New York during the 1970’s at a sale of movie props. We have no knowledge of what that movie may have been.
Featuring a tiered architectural silhouette with lift-top storage compartments, inset panel detailing, and oversized carved bracket feet reminiscent of traditional Ming furniture forms, this piece has exceptional visual presence from every angle. The warm aged mahogany finish has developed a beautiful patina over time, with light wear consistent with age adding to its character.
Underside pencil markings include “9-47,” likely indicating a September 1947 production date, along with workshop notations including “Mah,” presumed to reference mahogany construction. The piece strongly reflects the late 1940s fascination with Asian-inspired interiors that became popular in both Hollywood Regency and upscale American design after World War II.
Originally intended as a functional step chest or bedside commode stairs, it works beautifully today as a sculptural side table, accent chest, pedestal, or decorative storage piece in both traditional and eclectic interiors. The Ming-inspired feet and stepped profile give it an almost stage-set quality — highly decorative.
A rare piece that feels equally at home in a refined Chinoiserie interior, a layered English-style library, or a glamorous Hollywood Regency space.
