Designed in 1918, Rietveld aimed to create a novel piece of seating furniture that would be simple and inexpensive to produce. Initially, Rietveld produced the chair exclusively in a natural wood finish. It was only through his encounters with the artists Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg, the founders of the De Stijl movement, that the color was added. Thus, the "Slat Chair" became the "Red and Blue Chair," which has long since matured into a design icon. Our example comes from a very early Cassina production run from the 1970s and bears the low production number 276. The frame is made of black-stained beech. The seat and backrest are made of lacquered plywood. The manufacturer's mark is on the underside. Good overall condition, with signs of wear in the form of paint rubs and scratches. Considering the chair has been in use for over 50 years, it makes a very good impression. Seat height approx. 27 cm. This piece has an attribution mark,
