The style of this Dutch brass tobacco box was popular in the mid 1700s. The engraving is beautiful and the scandalous sneaky lovers scene comes with a (loosely translated) warning: “The fate of a hidden kiss sits caught.” I love the guy trying to sneak out the window! Goddesses Diana and Andromeda are also featured atop each scene. They are so beautiful. You’ll be hard-pressed to find another one as nice as this!
It was more common to see biblical scenes adorning these boxes. I learned thru my research that the ones with erotic scenes are rarer and thus more desirable. The condition of this one amazes me! It’s nearly perfect and almost 300 years old! You have a chance to own a true, museum-quality treasure here.
